Trump plans to reopen Alcatraz in a move that has drawn sharp reactions across the political spectrum. The former U.S. President says he wants to rebuild and expand the infamous island prison to house the country’s most violent criminals, calling the site a symbol of “law, order, and justice.”
“Today, I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ,”
he wrote on Truth Social, capital letters included. Framing the project as a symbol of law, order, and strength, Trump said the move was necessary because America had been “plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat criminal offenders for far too long.”
It’s a bold statement, and one that’s stirred plenty of controversy. The prison, nicknamed The Rock, was shut in 1963 after it became too expensive to run. Operating nearly three times more costly than other federal prisons, it was abandoned due to its remote island location and rising maintenance bills. Since then, it’s lived a second life as a preserved heritage site and cinematic backdrop.
Rebuilding the facility would require massive investment. Ageing infrastructure aside, any modern high-security prison would need to meet 21st-century standards for safety, surveillance, and staff access, all complicated by the site’s isolation in the middle of San Francisco Bay. Critics have also pointed out that the federal prison population in the US has fallen in recent years, leaving thousands of cells unused across the country.
But for Trump, the plan appears to be more than logistics. It’s about messaging. Alcatraz has long held a mythic status in American culture, with Hollywood films like Birdman of Alcatraz, Escape from Alcatraz and The Rock keeping its legend alive. The idea of reclaiming it as a working prison plays directly into a narrative of strength, control, and zero tolerance.
Some see the idea as little more than spectacle. “Not a serious proposal,” said one high-profile Democrat who represents the San Francisco area. Another called it “deeply unhinged” and warned against using symbolic gestures to score political points during an election season.
Trump’s track record on criminal justice includes a controversial policy of sending alleged gang members, some without convictions, to prisons abroad, including facilities in Central America. He has also floated the idea of sending US citizens to foreign jails, a suggestion that has raised legal and ethical questions.
Alcatraz itself holds a powerful place in the American imagination. Once a military fort and later a federal prison, it became home to figures like Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly. It’s remembered not just for its rigid rules, but for daring escape attempts – most famously in 1962, when three inmates disappeared into the bay and were never seen again.
