TfL are to Scrap 414 Bus Route in February

Londoners, get ready for a shake-up in your daily commute. From Saturday, 22nd February, Transport for London (TfL) are to scrap the 414 bus route, which runs between Putney Bridge and Marble Arch. Instead, TfL is increasing the frequency of the 14 bus route, which operates between Putney Heath and Russell Square. This service will now run every eight minutes instead of every ten, in an effort to compensate for the loss of the 414.

For many passengers, this change is far from welcome. A public consultation gathered 914 responses, with just over half expressing concerns about the impact of removing the 414. Some of the biggest worries included access to key hospitals, overcrowding on remaining services, and difficulties for those who rely on step-free access. Many have pointed out that the alternative routes will mean more passengers having to change buses, particularly at busy spots like Hyde Park Corner—an issue that could prove challenging for wheelchair users, parents with buggies, and those carrying luggage.

Local representatives have also voiced their frustration. One councillor highlighted that the 414 provides a vital link for commuters and patients travelling to hospitals such as Chelsea and Westminster, the Royal Marsden, and the Royal Brompton. While the increased frequency of the 14 is intended to reduce disruption, it will still mean fewer buses per hour overall, and passengers who previously had a direct journey may now need to make connections.

TfL, however, maintains that this is the best solution. According to their data, the boosted 14 service should provide enough capacity at peak times, and the additional option of the 74 bus, which follows a similar route between South Kensington and Marble Arch, will help ease pressure on the network. TfL has also said they will continue monitoring demand to assess whether further adjustments are needed. For full details on upcoming changes, passengers can check TfL’s bus service updates.
