Superloop SL12 route consultation launched in east London
The Superloop SL12 route could soon be the newest addition to London’s growing network of express bus services and this time, it’s east London in the spotlight. Transport for London has launched a consultation on SL12, a rapid connection between Rainham, Ferry Lane and Gants Hill via Romford. If approved, it would mean a much-needed improvement in north–south connectivity across Havering and beyond.
The SL12 would open up new travel options in areas currently under-served by rail, offering interchanges with the Elizabeth line and London Overground at Romford, the Underground at Gants Hill, and a future link to SL2. It’s part of a wider push to expand the Superloop network, TfL’s answer to outer London’s need for fast, orbital public transport. There are already nine Superloop routes operating, with more in the pipeline, including SL4 (which will be free for its first year), SL11, the Bakerloop, and a future “Superloop 2” network.
Ray Morgon, Leader of Havering Council, has encouraged residents to take part in the consultation, which is open until 23rd May.
“We are pleased to be working with TfL on a proposed SL12 Superloop route in the borough, something our residents really need and want. This will help towards improving our north–south connectivity,”
he said. “The success of the Superloop speaks for itself, and because of this, we would like more coverage of the borough.”
The full consultation on SL12 is live now on the TfL Have Your Say website, where residents can give feedback on the proposal. You can also still comment on the proposed SL11 route between North Greenwich and Abbey Wood here.
This is the proposed SL12 Route:

While SL12 is still in planning, a number of Superloop services are already connecting Londoners across the capital:
- SL1: North Finchley ↔ Walthamstow Central
- SL2: Walthamstow Central ↔ North Woolwich
- SL3: Thamesmead ↔ Bromley North
- SL5: Bromley North ↔ Croydon Town Centre
- SL6: West Croydon ↔ Russell Square
- SL7: West Croydon ↔ Heathrow Airport
- SL8: Uxbridge ↔ White City
- SL9: Heathrow Airport ↔ Harrow
- SL10: Harrow ↔ North Finchley
Each of these routes is designed to speed up journeys by using dedicated bus lanes, fewer stops, and reliable scheduling—offering a genuine alternative to car travel in outer London.
TfL’s broader Superloop vision reflects a more connected future for Londoners outside the central zones, something long called for by borough councils and local communities. As expansion plans develop, feedback from the public remains crucial to shaping routes that truly meet local needs.
