Streatham Hill upgrades to improve walking and cycling
A major overhaul is coming to Streatham Hill, aiming to make walking, cycling and commuting in the area smoother and safer. Starting on Monday 4th August, TfL is kicking off a long-anticipated scheme to improve transport and travel along the A23 corridor, a move that’s expected to benefit both residents and visitors in this busy part of south London.
The scheme, which TfL has developed closely with Lambeth Council, includes new pedestrian crossings, better bus lanes and a protected cycling route. For those who live or travel through Streatham Hill regularly, the changes are designed to make everyday journeys faster, safer and more accessible.
With lane closures starting in August and set to continue into the autumn, TfL is urging commuters to plan ahead. Roadworks will affect both directions of the A23 from Holmewood Road on Brixton Hill to Sternhold Avenue, including overnight closures on 3 and 4 August. Bus routes will still operate, though some stops may be suspended or relocated during works, more details are available on the TfL website.
According to TfL’s consultation, over 70% of local respondents felt the changes would make it safer or easier to walk in the area. The current layout, with limited pedestrian infrastructure and busy roads, doesn’t always support safer or greener travel. The new layout hopes to fix that by improving crossings, adding more continuous bus lanes and providing space for cycling, all while supporting footfall to local high streets.
TfL has confirmed that the works are being carefully managed to minimise disruption, and the full scheme is expected to roll out in phases through spring 2027. You can also read how nearby areas like Brixton are evolving too.
This investment marks a meaningful step forward for south London’s infrastructure, offering safer and more sustainable ways to get around. For full travel advice and real-time updates, visit TfL’s Streatham Hill works page.
