Soho Strips Back: The Fight Over a Full-Nudity Club
Soho full-nudity strip club plans have sparked debate as residents clash over a proposal to bring adult entertainment back to Walker’s Court. The Penthouse Club, a global brand with venues in the US, Australia, and Russia, hopes to take over the former site of Madame JoJo’s, promising a ‘premium’ experience with music, drag performances, and Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics. But while some argue this would revive Soho’s cultural identity, others fear it will undo years of change that have moved the area away from its past as a red-light district.
The Penthouse Club, an international chain with venues in the United States, Australia, and Russia, aims to establish its latest branch on Walker’s Court, the former site of the iconic Madame JoJo’s. The club promises a ‘premium’ experience, featuring not only traditional striptease but also music performances, drag shows, and Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics.
However, this proposal has sparked a divide among Soho residents and business owners. Many fear that introducing such a venue could revert the area to its previous ‘red-light district’ reputation. One concerned resident expressed, “Soho’s changing nature means that increasingly families include a visit to the neighbourhood in their weekends or as part of their tourist visit to the city. Are the clientele of a strip club likely to be the sorts of people to whom you wish to expose children and other unprepared visitors? Soho is no longer the seedy red-light district of yore.”
Conversely, some locals advocate for the club’s opening, viewing it as a means to preserve Soho’s unique cultural heritage. A supporter noted, “The applicant’s proposal to bring back an adult entertainment venue in this building block represents an opportunity to maintain and protect this culturally significant characteristic of Soho.”
The decision now rests with Westminster City Council, which is set to review the application. The outcome will not only determine the future of The Penthouse Club but also potentially reshape the cultural landscape of Soho.
