Slough considers becoming part of London
London could expand to include Slough as leaders there discuss a potential merger with either the Greater London Authority or even a west London council. Currently a part of Berkshire, the town sits just outside Greater London’s boundaries. But local leaders are discussing turning it into a part of the capital.
Unfortunately, Slough does not have the best reputation of any UK town, recently being named one of the country’s ugliest town and the UK’s most miserable place to live! “Lots of London boroughs ranked low on the happiness scale too, so Slough could fit right in,” Time Out says.
A potential merger comes as a result of the English Devolution policy from the national government. The policy hopes to reduce the amount of smaller authorities and replace them with larger authorities. More power would go towards local politicians as opposed to the central government.
Nothing has been decided yet however. The borough council of Slough has discussed a number of different available options, two of which involve turning it into a part of Greater London. Another is for it to merge with a “strategic authority,” which could be Berkshire or the Greater London Authority (GLA). It could also become part of a larger unitary authority or a borough in west London. Hillingdon is one of the options for this idea.
For a merger to be possible between Slough and London, elected politicians must agree and the public has to vote in favour. Even if the local council supports turning it into a part of London, there are no guarantees that it could happen.
