Safety recalls: Millions of vehicles remain unchecked

Recent figures have unveiled a concerning reality: over 3.2 million cars and vans in the UK have not been inspected following safety recalls issued between 2018 and 2023. This means that a significant number of potentially unsafe vehicles continue to operate on our roads.

Safety recalls are standard in the automotive industry, with manufacturers notifying owners of identified defects that could compromise vehicle safety. Typically, affected customers receive notifications advising them to contact their local dealership for necessary inspections or repairs. However, various factors contribute to the low compliance rate. Changes in ownership, outdated contact information, or simple oversight can result in owners missing these critical notifications. Additionally, some drivers may choose alternative service providers, bypassing franchise dealers who would typically address these recalls.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has introduced measures to tackle this issue. Since July 2023, MOT certificates now include information about outstanding safety recalls, aiming to alert owners during their vehicle’s annual inspection. This initiative has already facilitated the repair of over 330,000 vehicles with outstanding defects in its first year. Chris Price, DVSA’s Head of MOT, emphasised the importance of this development, stating, “Getting recalled vehicles fixed promptly has a huge benefit to road safety.”

Despite these efforts, the challenge persists. Manufacturers and dealerships must enhance their customer communication strategies to ensure that recall notices reach current vehicle owners promptly. For motorists, it’s crucial to remain proactive. Regularly checking your vehicle’s recall status can be done through the government’s vehicle recalls and faults service.

Addressing this issue is not just about compliance; it’s about ensuring the safety of all road users. By staying informed and responsive to recall notices, drivers can contribute to safer roads across the UK.
