Chancellor Rachel Reeves is under scrutiny over discrepancies in her professional history. Her LinkedIn profile previously indicated she worked at the Bank of England from September 2000 to December 2006. However, reports have surfaced suggesting she departed by March 2006 to join Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS) in West Yorkshire. This adjustment reduces her tenure at the Bank of England to approximately five and a half years, including a period spent studying for a Master’s degree.
A spokesperson for Ms Reeves attributed the incorrect dates to an administrative error by her team, noting that she had not reviewed the LinkedIn entry before its publication. The profile has since been updated to reflect her actual employment dates.
Further complicating matters, Ms Reeves has, on multiple occasions, referred to her experience at the Bank of England as spanning a decade. In a 2021 interview, she mentioned, “I spent a decade working as an economist at the Bank of England and loved it.” Similar statements were made in subsequent speeches and publications.
Adding to the controversy, a BBC investigation revealed that during her tenure at HBOS, Ms Reeves and two other senior managers were subjects of an internal expenses investigation. Allegations included the misuse of company funds for personal purchases such as handbags, perfume, and wine. Ms Reeves’s team has denied any wrongdoing, stating she was unaware of any investigation and faced no disciplinary action.
Political opponents have seized upon these revelations. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch remarked, “Keir Starmer said ‘restoring trust in politics is the greatest test of our era’. Until she comes clean—not just about her CV but about the circumstances in which she left HBOS—no one will take him seriously.”
In response, a Downing Street spokesperson affirmed the Prime Minister’s confidence in Ms Reeves, emphasizing their collaborative efforts to address the nation’s economic challenges.
These developments raise questions about the accuracy of public figures’ representations of their professional backgrounds and the importance of transparency in public office.
