R Kelly Hospitalised After Overdose in US Prison

R Kelly has reportedly been hospitalised after an overdose while serving his sentence in a North Carolina prison. The claims were made in a legal filing this week by his defence team, who allege he was given an “overdose quantity” of medication while in solitary confinement.

According to the court documents, the incident happened on 12th June at the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner. His lawyers say he was administered an unusually high dose of anxiety and sleep medication. By the following morning, he was said to have felt weak and dizzy, crawling to the cell door before losing consciousness. He was hospitalised the next day.

The same documents claim he was later removed from Duke University Hospital against medical advice, despite requiring treatment for blood clots in his lungs and legs. The singer’s legal team also alleges that he was taken off essential blood-thinner medication and denied surgery.

An audio clip shared online captures Kelly expressing fear over his treatment, saying:

“I don’t deserve to die because somebody miscommunicated… They didn’t even X-ray. And that’s why I’m speaking out on this.”

His legal team claims the ordeal has left him bedridden, with ongoing concerns about his health and lack of care. The 58-year-old was convicted in 2021 on multiple charges of sex trafficking and racketeering, involving underage victims. At sentencing, the judge said he had shown “indifference to human suffering” and described how he used his status to manipulate and control others.

In response to the latest claims, a representative for the prosecution said the singer was once again attempting to portray himself as a victim, describing his statements as consistent with the behaviour of “a master manipulator.”

The Federal Bureau of Prisons outlines guidelines on prisoner healthcare and staff responsibilities, including medication management. While the current claims remain under legal review, they’ve added further complexity to a case that continues to generate controversy.

Whether this is a case of mistreatment or manipulation, it’s clear the story of R Kelly isn’t over yet, and it’s unfolding behind locked doors.
