Professor Brian Cox excites curious minds at Brooklands

Professor Brian Cox CBE FRS kicked off Brooklands Innovation Academy’s largest and most successful event to date, uniting 400 students aged 11-18 for an immersive experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM). His inspiring address captivated attendees, encouraging them to explore the endless possibilities within these fields. Joining him was renowned physicist and popular science author Simon Lehna Singh MBE, further enriching the day’s discussions.

Brooklands Innovation Academy 2024 (BIA 2024) drew on the rich history of innovation and engineering that the Brooklands area is known for. The event featured engaging workshops that seamlessly integrated lessons from the past with cutting-edge STEM education. With a focus on “Learning by Doing,” students experienced hands-on activities designed to spark their curiosity and foster a deeper understanding of complex concepts.

Throughout the day, students were organized into groups of ten, rotating through 28 interactive workshops and hearing from six dynamic guest speakers. BIA 2024 has solidified its status as one of the UK’s most expansive single-day educational events. Many of the activities centered around pressing challenges of the 21st century, including the climate crisis, pollution, and advancements in sustainable transportation and medicine.

In addition to Professor Cox and Simon Singh, other distinguished speakers included Kwame Bekoe from Zero Petroleum and Preeti Roy from Haleon. The event also featured an Apprentice Panel chaired by Holly Hobbs from Apprentiva, showcasing apprentices from BAE Systems and other organizations.

BIA 2024 benefited from the support of numerous industry partners, including Haleon, BAE Systems, and McLaren, which hosted workshops that offered students a glimpse into the future of their respective fields. By bridging the gap between education and industry, the academy highlighted the critical role STEM skills will play in solving tomorrow’s challenges.

As part of the national Science Summer School programme, co-founded by Professor Brian Cox and Lord Andrew Mawson OBE, Brooklands Innovation Academy continues to inspire the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.
