In 2025, Rolls-Royce commemorates the 100-year legacy of the Phantom, a model synonymous with British luxury and craftsmanship. Since its debut in 1925, the Phantom has been the marque’s flagship, embodying elegance and engineering excellence across eight generations. To celebrate this centenary, Rolls-Royce has commissioned a series of bespoke artworks, each reflecting the Phantom’s cultural impact over the decades.
These contemporary illustrations pay homage to a tradition dating back to 1910 when artist Charles Sykes, creator of the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy, was commissioned to depict Rolls-Royce vehicles in various elite settings. The 2025 series showcases the Phantom’s evolution and its role in significant historical moments, from transporting royalty to featuring in pop culture. Notably, Field Marshal Montgomery used a Phantom III during WWII to ferry leaders like Winston Churchill and King George VI.
The Phantom’s association with the British royal family is profound. In 1948, the Duke of Edinburgh commissioned a Phantom IV, leading to a series of royal Phantoms that remain in service today . The model has also been a canvas for personal expression; John Lennon famously customised his Phantom V, reflecting the car’s adaptability to individual tastes.
Throughout 2025, Rolls-Royce plans various events to honour the Phantom’s centenary, including showcasing special editions like the Phantom Dragon, inspired by Chinese mythology. Each Phantom produced this year will feature a unique centenary chassis plaque, marking this milestone in automotive history.
