The Nissan Wave has been announced as a new budget electric city car based on the underpinnings of the new Renault Twingo. The car, according to Autocar, will take inspiration from its Pike retro cars from the 1990s including the Figaro (pictured).
The new car is expected to launch next year and will be built alongside the Twingo. It is expected that it will go on sale at a similar price point of under £20,000 as the Renault. This is thanks to cheaper lithium-ion-phosphate chemistry for the 27.5kWh battery.
Giovanny Arroba, the Japanese firm’s head of design, told Autocar that the Nissan Wave will take inspiration from the retro small cars from the 1990s known as the Pike cars after its Pike Factory special project group. The Wave nameplate, the publication reports, “was confirmed by a separate source at Nissan.”
The Pike cars were based on the underpinnings of the original Nissan Micra (known as the Nissan March in its home market). They gained a strong following for their retro looks with the Figaro developing cult status in the UK.
The Twingo, on which the Wave will be based, has also been given a retro design in a nod to the original 1990s city car. Renault has also channelled its past with the retro 4 and 5 EVs, with the latter being the basis of Nissan’s new Micra.
