London New Year’s Fireworks Marred by Car Incident

London’s New Year’s fireworks celebrations turned chaotic after a car swerved into crowds near Primrose Hill, injuring two people and prompting the arrest of a 40-year-old man. The incident, which occurred just after midnight, disrupted the festivities and left attendees shaken. According to the Metropolitan Police, officers were called to the junction of Primrose Hill Road and Regent’s Park Road following reports of a car colliding with a pedestrian before fleeing the scene and striking a second person moments later.

The Met Police released a statement confirming the timeline: “At 00:13hrs on Wednesday, 1st January, a vehicle was involved in a collision with a pedestrian at the junction of Regent’s Park Road and Primrose Hill Road. The driver failed to stop, continuing along Primrose Hill Road, where a second pedestrian was struck. Officers located the vehicle shortly after at the junction of Primrose Hill Road and King Henry’s Road.”

The first victim, a 21-year-old man, sustained minor injuries and did not require medical treatment. The second victim, a 59-year-old man, was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospital. His injuries have been deemed non-life-threatening. The driver, arrested nearby, faces charges of dangerous driving, causing grievous bodily harm, and possession of controlled drugs. Police have confirmed that the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related.

This distressing event comes a year after another tragic New Year’s incident at Primrose Hill, where 16-year-old Harry Pitman was fatally stabbed during celebrations. A 17-year-old charged with his murder faces a retrial later this year after the previous Old Bailey trial ended with no verdict.

The Primrose Hill area has long been a popular vantage point for Londoners to watch the fireworks, but recent incidents have raised concerns about safety during large public gatherings. Police had a significant presence in the area as part of the New Year’s Eve operation, which allowed them to respond quickly and locate the vehicle involved in this year’s collision.

As the investigation continues, Londoners are reminded to remain vigilant during large-scale events. Police have urged witnesses or anyone with video footage of the incident to come forward to aid their inquiries.
