Kamala Harris Set to Make History
In a move that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, President Joe Biden has ended his re-election bid and thrown his full support behind Vice President Kamala Harris. Announcing his decision on Sunday, Biden cited concerns over his age and recent debate performance.
“Choosing Kamala as my running mate was the best decision I’ve made,” Biden declared on X (formerly Twitter). “Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
Harris, already the first woman, Black person, and person of South Asian descent to serve as vice president, now stands poised to break even more barriers. If she secures the Democratic nomination and defeats Donald Trump in November, she will become the first female president of the United States.
Biden’s endorsement of Kamala Harris is seen as a strategic and selfless act. “He’s putting the American people and our country above everything else,” Harris remarked. “I am honoured to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination.”
Prominent Democrats quickly rallied around Harris following Biden’s announcement, although some voices within the party are calling for a rapid “mini primary” to consider other potential candidates before the Democratic convention in Chicago next month.
A recent poll by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research revealed that about 60% of Democrats believe Harris would perform well as president, while around 40% of U.S. adults hold a favourable opinion of her. However, her journey to this point has been anything but smooth.
Harris’s own presidential bid in 2020 ended before the primaries began, but she found her stride as Biden’s running mate, particularly in her advocacy for abortion rights following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. Her performance in recent weeks, particularly after Biden’s debate stumble, has further solidified her standing among Democrats.
Even before Biden’s backing, Harris was seen as a frontrunner for the 2024 Democratic ticket, with significant foreign policy experience and national name recognition. Potential rivals like California Governor Gavin Newsom and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer now face an uphill battle.
Harris’s political journey is deeply rooted in her upbringing. Born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, to activist parents, she was raised in a milieu of social justice. After attending Howard University and law school in San Francisco, she embarked on a career as a prosecutor, surprising her activist family. Her tenure as San Francisco district attorney and later as California’s attorney general showcased her commitment to justice and reform, despite some controversies.
In 2014, Harris married entertainment lawyer Douglas Emhoff, becoming stepmother to his two children, Ella and Cole. Her political ascent continued as she won a Senate seat in 2016, quickly becoming a prominent critic of President Trump’s administration.
Harris’s role as Biden’s vice president has not been without challenges. She faced significant scrutiny over her handling of migration issues and border control. However, her outspoken stance on abortion rights and her ability to connect with young voters and communities of colour have been notable.
As Kamala Harris steps into the spotlight, she draws on a lifetime of experience and a career built on breaking barriers. Her journey from the streets of Oakland to potentially the highest office in the land is a testament to her resilience and determination.
With Biden’s endorsement and the backing of many leading Democrats, Kamala Harris stands at the brink of making history once again. The upcoming election promises to be a pivotal moment, not just for her but for the nation as a whole.
