Hammersmith & Fulham Launches New Electric Waste Fleet to Cut Carbon Emissions

Hammersmith & Fulham Council has taken another significant step towards becoming one of the greenest boroughs in the UK and announces it is to introduce 20 new electric vehicles to its waste management fleet. This eco-friendly initiative is part of the H&F council’s broader commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and improving air quality for residents.

The new fleet, launched in collaboration with contractors Veolia in July, includes a mix of electric cargo bikes, vans, and cage trucks. These vehicles are now actively being used by the council’s waste team to carry out essential services such as collecting food and general waste, emptying recycling bins, cleaning public footways, and removing illegally dumped fly-tipping. The shift to electric vehicles not only supports environmental goals but also contributes to quieter, cleaner streets throughout the borough.

Cllr Sharon Holder, Hammersmith & Fulham’s Cabinet Member for Public Realm, emphasized the dual benefits of this new fleet, stating, “Our waste team continues to ensure H&F’s parks and streets are safe and clean for residents, visitors, and local wildlife. The new vehicles will help us go one step further, as the waste team will now also be helping to reduce air pollution while they work.”

Cleaner, Greener, Quieter Streets

This initiative is a continuation of Hammersmith & Fulham’s efforts to become a leader in environmental sustainability. Following the transition of the parks maintenance team to electric tools and vehicles in 2022, the waste team is now the latest to join this green revolution. The zero-emission vehicles will significantly reduce local air pollution and contribute to a quieter urban environment, addressing both air quality and noise pollution concerns.

The new fleet includes eight electric cargo bikes designed for use in areas that are difficult to reach with traditional vehicles, such as the Thames Pathway. The electric vans and cage trucks will replace old petrol and diesel vehicles, further reducing the borough’s reliance on fossil fuels. An electric bin truck has also been introduced as part of the council’s new garden waste collection service, aimed at providing an eco-friendly solution for residents’ garden waste disposal needs.

This move aligns with the broader goals of the council, which include transitioning to more sustainable practices across all departments. For more details on how the borough is working towards reducing its carbon footprint, visit the Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s official website.

By continuing to invest in green technology and infrastructure, Hammersmith & Fulham is setting an example for other boroughs and cities across the UK. The council’s commitment to environmental sustainability ensures that residents can enjoy cleaner air, quieter streets, and a healthier environment for generations to come.
