Hay fever warning due to high pollen count
A Met Office pollen forecast map revealed some areas in England have a “very high” warning level for pollen, causing an early hay fever season. The weather forecast over the past few weeks has been ideal for tree pollen being released, the Met Office said, while low rainfall has meant that pollen has not been washed out of the atmosphere.
A high pollen count means a many people could experience hay fever. This includes sneezing, itchy eyes, mouth and throat, and a blocked nose. Over ten million Britons experience hay fever, the Met Office says.
Pollen count is the number of particles per cubic metre of air. A reading of 50 to 150 grains of grass pollen is considered a high amount. The regions expected to suffer include London and the South East, the East and West Midlands, and the East of England.
Later this week, a “very high” level is expected in some areas, with the Met Office saying that this is because of the warn and dry conditions which allow tree pollen to thrive, especially birch. The UK will be experiencing higher than average birch pollen levels as a result of the ideal conditions for pollen production during the last spring and summer.
