Gambling adverts with Hamilton and Chelsea logo banned
Gambling adverts featuring F1 racer, Lewis Hamilton, and the logo of Chelsea FC have been banned over concerns that they could influence children. The ads were published by two gambling firms, Kwiff and Betway and were banned following investigations into complaints, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said.
Betway’s YouTube gambling ad featured football fans wearing clothes with the Chelsea logo, while Kwiff made a post on X that used a picture of Hamilton. Both companies were warned not to include anyone who would have a strong appeal to those under 18.
Betway said it has fully cooperated with the ASA investigation and will implement the recommendation. Chelsea Football Club has also said it will work with its partners to ensure its ads comply with the rules.
In the ruling on Kwiff, the ASA said that a researcher from Bristol University had made a complaint over concerns that its ads could appeal to under-18s. The gambling ad featured an image of Hamilton, saying that there would be a “huge weekend” for him at the British Grand Prix, accompanied by an 18+ symbol and BeGambleAware.org logo, according to the ASA. It also included a link to an article on the Kwiff website about the race.
The ASA wrote Eaton Gate Gambling, which runs Kwiff, says that its data showed that Hamilton appealed to an older audience. The post aimed to bring readers to the company blog with its “editorial commentary” on a site separate from its gambling platforms, Kwiff told the ASA. It said it has since reviewed its social media and taken down anything which featured mainstream athletes, the ASA said.
