Friends of Street Trees, join to help young trees thrive

Aside from looking out for yourself and your loved ones during the rise in temperature, Richmond invites everyone to care for the young street trees all around. With warmer and drier days expected, public support is “essential to help them thrive,” especially as a lack of water is the number one killer of street trees in England. Friends of Street Trees is a community led, volunteer group dedicated to helping the trees thrive.
Richmond is collaborating with its specialist contractor to bring about its “most ambitious watering and aftercare programme to date,” including over 2,000 young trees. This, the council says is an “enormous challenge,” adding that “any additional watering support from the community – especially during hot and dry spells, goes a long way to ensure our trees make the most of the sunlight and thrive!”
Over this spring and summer, Friends of Street Trees is calling on residents to join in, helping the group by watering young trees near their homes. This small act can make a large difference. Find out more at the website.
Even if you can’t volunteer, you can still make a big impact. Even watering the young tree on your street with 10 litres every couple of days can help it survive and thrive. Learn how to water your local street tree.
