FAA limits capacity in US as flights cancelled or delayed
America’s government shutdown has resulted in thousands of flights being cancelled or delayed on Saturday 8th November as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) limits capacity at 40 of the country’s major airports. The shutdown is the longest in US history.
As of 4:30pm eastern time (ET) on the Sunday, over 2,200 flights were cancelled across the USA, the FlightAware website revealed. The FAA dealt with issues related to staff in air traffic controller towers and centres. Around 7,500 flights ended up being delayed as a result of the shutdown.
1,521 flights were cancelled across the USA on Saturday and over 6,400 flights in the country were delayed. The figures on Saturday surpassed those on Friday when 1,024 flights were cancelled, ABC News reported. Since that day, more than 3,700 flights have been cancelled.
The disruptions were expected to continue through the weekend into Sunday. On the Saturday, there were over 40 air traffic control staffing triggers at various facilities in the entire USA.
The FAA has opted not to cut any international flights. This is because doing so would be a violation of international agreements with other countries, according to Transport Secretary Sean Duffy in an interview with ABC News Live on Friday 9th November.
