Enjoy green spaces responsibly this summer, says Richmond council
Richmond’s green spaces are “perfect for enjoying the longer days of spring and summer,” the council says, as it reminds residents and visitors that “it’s important to remember these areas are shared with local wildlife.” It is calling on people to enjoy these green spaces responsibly and help keep the parks “clean, safe, and welcoming for all, humans and animals alike.”
Feeding birds, it says, “may seem like a kind gesture,” but not every kind of food is good for them. Food such as bread, pasta, and process food can make birds, as well as other animals, unwell, and leave waste that attracts pests. If you do feed birds, it “please limit to small quantities of grain or birdseed.”
Young birds, especially in the breeding season between March and September, are especially vulnerable and dogs kept off leads can cause nesting birds to abandon their eggs or young. To help protect “our feathered residents,” dog walkers are advised to keep their pets on a lead ner ponds and other nesting areas, particularly places such as Barnes Pond where birdlife is especially active.
“Our parks are wonderful places to walk your dog, and we love seeing residents and their furry friends enjoying these spaces,” the council says. “To help protect both wildlife and visitors, we kindly ask that dogs are kept on leads in sensitive wildlife areas and that owners always clean up after them. Dog waste can carry harmful parasites and pollute our parks, so disposing of it properly helps keep these shared spaces pleasant for everyone.”
