Dolly Parton donates to hurricane relief efforts

Renowned singer and philanthropist Dolly Parton has pledged a generous $1 million (£763,000) to assist with relief efforts following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in the United States. The country music icon’s donation will support those affected by the storm, which has left a trail of destruction across several states.
Parton’s contribution will help fund both immediate relief and long-term recovery projects, with a focus on providing essential supplies, housing, and aid for displaced communities. The money is set to go to disaster relief organisations that are actively working to provide food, water, shelter, and medical support to those in need.
The singer, who has long been known for her charitable work, has previously supported relief efforts for natural disasters, including previous hurricanes, wildfires, and floods. Her Dollywood Foundation, which she established to help underprivileged children, has expanded its scope to assist with a wide range of humanitarian efforts.
Parton, who was born in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, to a poor family in rural Appalachia, has long drawn inspiration from her upbringing, often reflecting on her childhood in her songs, such as “Smoky Mountain Memories” and “My Tennessee Mountain Home.” Her deep connection to the region continues to influence her charitable efforts, especially when it comes to disaster relief.
In addition to Dolly Parton’s generous $1 million donation, Walmart U.S. CEO John Furner announced that the retail giant, including Sam’s Club and the Walmart Foundation, would contribute a total of $10 million to hurricane relief efforts across the affected states. Parton’s affiliated businesses, including Dollywood Parks & Resorts and The Dollywood Foundation, also pledged to match her personal donation with an additional $1 million to the Mountain Ways Foundation.
The destruction caused by Hurricane Helene has been devastating. At least 225 lives have been confirmed lost as the storm swept through the Southeast, with officials predicting the death toll may rise as recovery efforts progress. Satellite images reveal large parts of North Carolina severely affected, and President Biden has warned that rebuilding the damage could cost “billions of dollars.”
As Hurricane Helene continues to affect millions, Parton’s support will go a long way in aiding recovery efforts in some of the hardest-hit areas.
