Discount for electric cars up to £3,750

Some new electric cars will see a discount as the government announces grants of up to £3,750. This hopes to encourage more drivers to make the switch to an electric vehicle (EV) from petrol and diesel.

The discount will apply to any eligible vehicle that costs no more than £37,000, and the most eco-friendly models will see the biggest reductions, according to the Department for Transport (DfT). Car manufacturers can apply for the funding and the RAC says that these cheaper EVs should appear at dealerships “within weeks.”

But, the BBC reports, some drivers have said that the UK will need more charging points to encourage more people to make the switch to EVs. The government has pledged to ban the sale of brand-new fully petrol or diesel cars from 2030.

Under the new scheme, a discount could be from £1,500 to £3,750. A carmaker has to apply for an individual model to be eligible, being allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. When a model has been approved, the firm will take that amount off its price, allowing buyers to see the lower price at the dealership. They will not have to do anything to get a discount.

A list of eligible vehicles is set to be published soon by the government. The grants to reduce the price of EVs comes from a  £650 million scheme. It will be available for three years.

Britain currently boasts around 1.3 million EVs on the road. But there are only around 82,000 public charging points. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has said that the government vows to pledge £63 million towards funding more.
