He brings more than two decades of experience in government communications. During a 23-year Civil Service career he has advised ministers and senior officials on policy, operational and crisis communications, holding senior roles at the Northern Ireland Office, the Department for Transport and UK Export Finance.

At the City Corporation, Hall will oversee the teams responsible for communicating the organisation’s work across government, business and international audiences. The role also includes responsibility for internal communications and engagement across the Corporation’s departments.

The appointment comes as the Corporation continues to promote the Square Mile as a global centre for finance, innovation and professional services. Communications and engagement form part of the organisation’s wider strategy to attract businesses, workers and visitors to the City while maintaining London’s competitiveness as an international financial hub.

Alongside representing the interests of the financial district, the City Corporation delivers a wide range of services across London. These include support for schools, policing, housing and major cultural institutions, as well as the management of parks, open spaces and other public amenities used by millions of Londoners and visitors each year.

Chris Hayward, Policy Chairman of the City of London Corporation, said the appointment comes at an important moment for the organisation.

“The City’s success drives UK success, and we have a plan to ensure the Square Mile remains the global business destination of choice,” he said.

“Robert joins at a critical time to support this investment, advocacy and ambitious innovation agenda. His experience in strategic communications leadership at the highest levels of government will build on excellent work already underway.”

Hall said the City Corporation’s role extended beyond the boundaries of the Square Mile.

“The City Corporation is simply unique,” he said. “It shapes the lives of people living, working in, and visiting London and, through its role supporting the City as the country’s economic powerhouse, the whole UK.”

He added that he looked forward to working with the organisation’s leadership and communications teams to deliver “confident, trusted communications and engagement that reflects the City Corporation’s influence, ambition and scale of public service.”

The role will see Hall take responsibility for developing the Corporation’s communications strategy as it continues to promote the economic contribution of the Square Mile and its wider civic and cultural responsibilities across London.
