Christmas getaway disrupted by weather

The Christmas getaway period has been disrupted millions of travellers with many flights and ferries cancelled due to high winds, the Evening Standard reported.

Yellow warnings came into effect over the weekend and remain in many parts of the country including North East, North West, South West and West Midlands along with Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Hampshire, as well as Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. This means that people all over the country looking for a Christmas getaway are likely to be affected.

A “small number of flights,” according to Heathrow, have been cancelled due to the “strong winds and airspace restrictions.” Figures have revealed that over 100 flights have been disrupted with many more being delayed.

“Due to adverse weather this weekend, restrictions have been put on the number of flights able to take off and land at Heathrow and therefore we’ve had to make a small number of cancellations,” a spokesperson for British Airways said. “We’re offering free flight changes for those customers booked on short-haul services who don’t wish to travel this weekend, and we will be offering rebooking and refund options as always to those whose journeys are disrupted as a result of the restrictions. While the vast majority of our customers will travel as planned, our teams are working hard to help those who have been affected get their travel plans back on track at this important time of year.”

P&O Ferries reported that journeys between Larne and Cairnryan had to be cancelled until late on Sunday while CalMac, which runs ferries in Scotland’s west coast, cancelled 29 out of its 30 routes.
