Cartels in Mexico could be targeted by US
US President Donald Trump has hinted that his country may begin to strike drug cartels on Mexican land. The groups, he said in a TV interview, control the country.
Speaking to Fox News’ Hannity on Thursday 8th January, the president said that the United States has cut drug trafficking by sea and intends to focus on land routes.
“We knocked out 97% of the drugs coming in by water, and we are going to start now hitting land with regard with the cartels,” he said. “The cartels are running Mexico,” Trump added. “It’s very sad to watch and see what’s happened to that country.”
This comes after recent comments earlier in the week by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum who rejected American military intervention against the drug cartels operating in the country. Sheinbaum said during her daily press briefing in the capital that Mexico would cooperate with Washington over security matters under the condition that the US respects their sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“It is necessary to reaffirm that in Mexico, the people rule, and that we are a free, independent and sovereign country,” she said. “Cooperation, yes. Subordination and intervention, no.”
When asked about previous comments made by Trump, Sheinbaum said that the idea of US involvement in Mexico had been raised on multiple occasions and that her government “firmly” rejected it.
