Carney, Canada PM, to sign defence pact with EU

Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has arrived in Europe to sign pacts that hope to boost defence spending. While Russia was expected to be the main topic of discussion, escalations in the Middle East are now likely to be take centre stage.
Carney revealed that he intends to form closer ties with the EU through a security pact, before gathering with NATO leaders in The Hague later in the week. This will be to pledge more military spending, largely in response to concerns about Russia and China.
But following the US airstrikes on Iran, the theme of these summits will change. Donald Trump’s unexpected and unprecedented move to strike the country’s nuclear sites is expected to challenge Carney’s efforts to talk foreign policy. Canada hopes to distance itself from the US and form closer ties to Europe instead.
The PM issued a statement backing America’s condemnation of Iran’s nuclear ambitions with Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, who is travelling with him, defending Washington’s actions after landing in Belgium. “The reality is, over the past decades, Iran has been developing its nuclear capacity, and it is a source of grave instability in the region. The actions of the United States were an attempt to alleviate that threat,” Ms. Anand said.
She called for the US and Iran to “immediately” return “to the negotiating table and reach a diplomatic solution to end this crisis.”
