British Supersport crash at Oulton Park claims lives of Owen Jenner and Shane Richardson

The British motorcycle racing season opened under a dark cloud this week following a tragic crash during the British Supersport Championship at Oulton Park. Two riders, Owen Jenner, 21, and Shane Richardson, 29, lost their lives in a high-impact collision involving 11 bikes during the first lap of Monday’s race.

The crash occurred at turn one, where riders funnel into a tight corner after the start – a spot known for its intensity. The race was stopped immediately, and emergency crews responded trackside. Jenner was treated at the scene and later pronounced dead at the medical centre due to a catastrophic head injury. Richardson was transferred from the circuit with severe chest injuries but died before arriving at hospital.

Another competitor, Tom Tunstall, 47, suffered significant injuries to his back and abdomen and remains in hospital. Five other riders were treated for less serious injuries, while three more escaped without harm. Organisers cancelled the remainder of the event shortly after the incident.

This was the third race of the Oulton Park weekend and marked the opening round of the 2025 British Superbike support series. Despite strong performances in Sunday’s and earlier Monday races, including a win by Leon Haslam, attention has now turned to the ongoing investigation into what went wrong.

Motorsport Vision Racing has confirmed that it is working with officials to understand the full circumstances surrounding the crash. Cheshire Constabulary and the local coroner are also involved. The British motorcycle community, known for its tight-knit support and passion, has been left reeling.

The British Supersport Championship runs alongside the Superbike series and is a proving ground for emerging riders and privateer teams. The incident has prompted renewed discussion about safety measures on the circuit and in racing formats.

Further information about the calendar and updates can be found via the British Superbike Championship.
