Brazilian government outraged with US over denial of human rights of deportees

The Brazilian government has said that it is outraged with the US after dozens of immigrants deported from America came off the plane in handcuffs. The South American country’s government called it a “flagrant disregard” for the rights of those deported. Its foreign ministry has revealed that it will demand an explanation from America over what it referred to as the “degrading treatment of passengers on the flight.”

This comes as countries in Latin America are forced to contend with Donald Trump’s return to the presidency and his hard-line agenda against immigration. He has long promised crackdowns and mass deportations and has begun to deliver on his promise.

As the plane landed in the northern city of Manaus, authorities from Brazil ordered the American officials to “immediately remove the handcuffs,” according to a statement from the justice ministry. According to the statement, Justice Minister Ricardo Lewandowski spoke with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva about the “the flagrant disregard for the fundamental rights of Brazilian citizens.”

Brazil has said that it will be calling on “explanations from the US government about the degrading treatment of passengers” on the plane.

88 Brazilian citizens were on board the plane. Among them was Edgar Da Silva Moura, a 31-year-old computer technician. He had spent seven months in detention in the United States.

“On the plane they didn’t give us water, we were tied hands and feet, they wouldn’t even let us go to the bathroom,” he said to AFP. “It was very hot, some people fainted.”

21-year-old freelancer Luis Antonio Rodrigues Santos spoke of the “nightmare of those with “respiratory problems” spending four hours with no air conditioning because of technical issues on the aircraft.

“Things have already changed, immigrants are treated as criminals,” he said.
