Boat Race 2025: Cambridge Secure Another Clean Sweep on the Thames
It was another decisive outing for Cambridge in the Boat Race 2025, as both the men’s and women’s teams delivered convincing victories over Oxford on the River Thames. The annual event, watched by thousands along the stretch from Putney Bridge to Mortlake, reaffirmed Cambridge’s dominance in the rivalry.
The men’s race, slightly delayed due to debris in the water, saw Cambridge take a clear lead early on. They never looked back, finishing 17 seconds ahead, a third straight win and their sixth in the last seven years. Cambridge president Luca Ferraro described it as “something really special” and credited the momentum building out of the team’s boathouse.
Speaking after the race, George Bourne from the winning crew likened the feeling to a moment of national triumph: “It’s like Andy Murray winning Wimbledon. This is our final. That’s the level.” Meanwhile, Oxford’s Tom Sharrock graciously acknowledged the outcome: “They outdid us today, full credit but I’m still proud to wear dark blue.”
The women’s race brought its own share of drama with a rare restart, the first since 2012, after Oxford’s boat drifted into Cambridge’s path leading to a clash of oars. Although a disqualification was briefly considered by the umpire, the race was restarted with Cambridge granted a small advantage. They went on to extend their lead, taking their eighth consecutive win and bringing their total to 49 victories in the 79 editions of the women’s event.
Cambridge cox Jack Nicholas reflected on the incident: “I held the line, and Oxford encroached. We clashed, that’s racing. They paid the price.” Stroke Samantha Morton added, “You prepare for a clash but don’t expect it. I was honestly dazed.”
The Boat Race remains one of the UK’s most iconic sporting traditions. Despite recent water quality concerns, the race returned to the traditional four-mile course uninterrupted.
