Biden performance in debate exacerbates age fears for president

Ahead of the debate on Thursday the 27th, many in America expressed their fears regarding Joe Biden’s age and his fitness for office. The debate has only worsened these following the president’s performance.

Many felt that he stumbled, fell flat, and was rambling and unclear. Around halfway through the debate, the Biden campaign told reporters that the president had been battling a cold, hoping to explain his seemingly raspy voice but many see it as just an excuse.

For an hour and a half, Joe Biden “was on the ropes” especially early in the evening with many of his answers described as “nonsensical.” At one point, he ended an answer by saying “we finally beat Medicare” which caused confusion as he referenced the government run healthcare programme for the elderly.

Biden’s former communications director Kate Bedingfield was on CNN immediately after the debate. “There’s no two ways about it, that was not a good debate for Joe Biden,” she said. The biggest issue, she said, would be proving that he had the energy and stamina to lead, something which many felt he didn’t do.

As the debate continued, Biden began taking swings at his opponent, hoping to change the momentum. A few landed and provoked angry responses from his opponent and predecessor, Donald Trump.

The first few topics raised by CNN moderators centres around the top issues including the economy and immigration, something which polls show that Americans trust Donald Trump more on, making things even worse for Joe Biden.
