Cutty Sark celebrates 70 years at Greenwich

The Cutty Sark has been a beloved attraction in London and a part of its skyline for 70 years. On, 10th December 1954, the ship made its last ever voyage, arriving at its new home. It would sail into a custom-built dry dock in the heart of Greenwich.

In the decades since then, over 17 million visitors have climbed on board the Cutty Sark, walking on its decks, and getting a chance to experience what life at sea would be like aboard it.

To mark the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the Cutty Sark, a new display will tell the story of how the ship made its way into the Roya Borough in the heart of London. Learn how the public’s support as well as royal patronage both worked to help save the ship from ruin in the 1950s.

Find out about how the Cutty Sark would be towed over too its new home, along with all the work it needed to preserve the iconic survivor from the “glorious days of sail.” And discover the memories of the historic ship, while making and sharing your own memories of the iconic vessel.

The display will be included with all tickets to the Cutty Sark. See it in the Dry Dock beneath the ship itself.

While you’re there, you can buy Cutty Sark: Last of the Tea Clippers 150th Anniversary Edition. This is an updated and expanded special edition book that celebrates the ship’s 150th anniversary. This unique title is the first ever publication of the specially commissioned photography, created as part of its restoration and the findings from the resulting research.

It spans the ship’s construction at Dumbarton in  1896, her famous tea voyage, her eventual return to the Thames, even the dramatic fire and restoration before reopening in 2012.
