Winner of Polestar and Hot Wheels 2024 Design Contest announced

Polestar, the Swedish electric performance car manufacturer, has unveiled the winner of its 2024 Design Contest, a global competition held in partnership with Hot Wheels. This year’s contest invited designers to create models inspired by Hot Wheels’ iconic 1:64 scale cars, while incorporating Polestar’s signature minimalist design ethos.

The first-place prize was awarded to Shashank Shekhar, a professional designer from India, for his rugged off-road concept, the ‘Polestar TRX’. The design, with its bold proportions and sleek lines, offers a striking departure from Polestar’s usual understated style. Shekhar’s creation will be the first-ever Polestar vehicle featured in Hot Wheels’ renowned toy car series, with the die-cast model set to hit shelves in the summer of 2025.

“I’m thrilled to win,” said Shekhar. “This is the first design in my career to be produced, so it’s a huge milestone for me. I never imagined something I created would become a Hot Wheels car. This experience has given me a great boost as a young designer.”

Hot Wheels, a brand synonymous with automotive design and culture for over 50 years, is known for pushing the boundaries of car design. The collaboration with Polestar in this special edition of the Design Contest encouraged contestants to explore new creative heights, with a focus on innovation and playfulness.

Italy’s Powei Chen took the runner-up spot with his ‘Cyber Shaker’, a cyberpunk-inspired design that combines futuristic elements with classic car culture. German designer Roman Moor received an honourable mention for his ‘Polestar Track Toy’, a sleek, Le Mans-inspired model.

The 2024 contest saw a record 1,200 entries from around the world, marking one of the largest editions of the competition to date. The panel of judges, which included representatives from both Polestar and Hot Wheels parent company Mattel, praised the creativity and boldness of the submissions.

“We were excited by the innovative ideas from this year’s entrants,” said Juan-Pablo Bernal, Polestar’s Head of Interior Design. “I’m looking forward to seeing the ‘Polestar TRX’ come to life in 1:64 scale.”

This year’s contest marks the fourth edition of the Polestar Design Contest, which has long supported and nurtured emerging design talent in the automotive industry.
