South Asian Heritage month celebrated in Richmond
This South Asian Heritage Month, Richmond is “reflecting on the powerful stories of resilience, identity and culture that shaped our communities and continue to enrich the society we share today.” Running from 18th July to 17th August, South Asian Heritage Month is a time to recognise the rich and diverse contributions of South Asian communities, while encouraging cultural exchange and fostering a sense of connection across our diverse communities.
On Sunday 27 July, as part of the High Tide Festival and in celebration of South Asian Heritage Month, look out for People Who Live in the Skies, a performance by the Amina Khayyam Dance Company. The performance will be followed by a free dance and movement workshop. People Who Live in the Skies is an enchanting, exciting and engaging tale using exhilarating storytelling movement of Kathak dance.
Libraries will be showcasing a selection of fiction, memoirs, thrillers, children’s adventures and cultural commentaries that explore the stories, voices, and contributions of the South Asian community. You can also explore the collections online:
“Richmond upon Thames is proud to be an inclusive and welcoming place, where people of all backgrounds, cultures and identities are celebrated and valued,” the council said in a press release. “Whether you’re hosting a community event, sharing family traditions, or reflecting on your heritage, we want to hear how the local South Asian community is celebrating.”
