Servicing costs for EVs nearly 30% cheaper

As electric vehicle (EV) registrations make up a fifth of the new car market in 2025, new data finds that, in addition to being cheaper to charge up, servicing costs are cheaper too. The Car Expert, an automotive consumer advice platform estimates that those who drive EVs can expect to pay 29% less to maintain and service their car over five years compared with petrol, diesel, and even hybrid cars.

This is based on data supplied by automotive analytics provider Clear Vehicle Data, which looks at over 600 new and nearly new cars on sale in the UK. Looking at official manufacturer servicing schedules, it analysed every version of each model on sale, with millions of data points.

“Servicing is often an overlooked part of the total cost of ownership, but it’s an area where electric vehicles continue to deliver a clear and measurable advantage,” said Stuart Masson, Editorial Director at The Car Expert. “While overall costs have risen slightly across the market, the long-term maintenance savings with EVs remain compelling. Here at The Car Expert, our mission is to give drivers clear, independent insights into every stage of car ownership – and that includes looking beyond the purchase price. Servicing costs may not be front of mind when choosing a car, but they play a major role in what you’ll spend over time, and it’s vital that drivers factor that into their decision-making.”

Despite the increase in servicing costs across the board over the last year, the data shows that EVs remain cheaper to maintain compared with their petrol, diesel, and hybrid equivalents. There are many reasons for this but primarily, it is due to the simplicity of their drivetrain, having fewer moving parts, no oil to change, and a lower number of components that need regular servicing.
