Runaway kangaroo shuts down American highway
A runaway kangaroo has temporarily shut down part of an interstate highway in the US state of Alabama. State troopers, along with the marsupial’s owner, worked to move the animal out of harm’s way.
Alabama’s Law Enforcement Agency reported that a section of the south and northbound lanes of Interstate 85 were closed after the runaway kangaroo interrupted traffic. It had caused two vehicles to crash, CNN reports. The crash did not injure the animal, according to a Facebook post by the agency, but it is unknown if any of the drivers of passengers have been harmed.
The animal was recovered and the road was eventually reopened, a statement from local law enforcement revealed.
“When somebody said there was a kangaroo of course I didn’t believe it, and nobody believed it. But I’m looking at him,” Macon County Sheriff Andre Brunson said in a Facebook live video as the animal was captured. “We see a little bit of everything here.”
The video captured the kangaroo slowly moving on a hill by the highway moments after being shot with a tranquiliser. The owner carried it down from the hill and into a car.
Patrick Starr who owns the runaway kangaroo, named Sheila, told the the Associated Press that they run a pumpkn patch and petting zoo, adding that Sheila is just a pet.
“She’s back home safe. She’s up. She’s not sedated anymore. She’s eating. She’s drinking. She’s not injured,” he told the AP. She received treatment from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, he said.
