Remembrance service marks D-Day 80th Anniversary

D-Day was the theme of this year’s annual remembrance service at City Hall, which brought together political leaders, faith communities, and representatives from the Armed Forces to honour those who have lost their lives in global conflicts. The service, held in the iconic building overlooking the Thames, commemorated the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings and paid tribute to all those who gave their lives in World War II and other conflicts.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, the Chair of the London Assembly, Andrew Boff AM, and Len Duvall OBE AM, Chair of the City Hall Branch of the Royal British Legion, led the commemoration alongside Assembly Members and senior representatives from London’s emergency services, Armed Forces, and other key organisations. Faith leaders from Sikh, Hindu, Christian, Jewish, and Muslim communities also participated, offering prayers, hymns, and readings to mark the occasion.

The service was officiated by the Rt Revd Lynne Cullens, Bishop of Barking, who delivered the opening address. Music was provided by the London International Gospel Choir, adding a soulful element to the proceedings.

A special exhibition was held to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, showcasing powerful photographic portraits of 16 Normandy veterans, displayed in London’s Living Room. The exhibition, in collaboration with Blind Veterans UK and photographer Richard Cannon, also featured WWII artefacts from the London Docklands Museum.

The wreath-laying ceremony was attended by senior figures from the Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service, and St John’s Ambulance, alongside the Mayor of London and London borough leaders.

In his address, Mayor Sadiq Khan remarked: “As we remember the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces, especially on this 80th anniversary of D-Day, we reflect on the courage and selflessness that shaped our city and our freedoms.”

Andrew Boff AM, Chair of the London Assembly, added: “Today’s Remembrance Service reminds us of the extraordinary bravery of ordinary people during the World Wars, and honours the service of those in our Armed Forces, both past and present.”

The service was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made for peace, and of the continuing courage of those who serve in defence of freedom.
