Refuge to deliver domestic abuse support from Spring
From 1st April, 2025, Refuge will take over the provision of Independent Domestic Violence Advocate (IDVA) services in Richmond upon Thames, ensuring that victims receive expert guidance and essential resources to rebuild their lives.
“Domestic abuse has a devastating impact on individuals and families, and ensuring access to high-quality, specialist support is a priority for us,” Councillor Katie Mansfield, Richmond Council’s White Ribbon Champion, said.
“Refuge brings a wealth of expertise, and we are confident that this new partnership will strengthen the support available to those in need. Everyone has the right to live free from fear and abuse, and we will continue working to make that a reality in Richmond.”
IDVAs are frontline professionals who provide practical and emotional support to people experiencing domestic abuse. They work closely with survivors to help them navigate the legal system, access safe housing, and connect with services that ensure their safety and wellbeing. Their role is to empower individuals to make informed choices and regain control over their lives.
The transition to Refuge, the council says, is part of its “wider work to make the borough safer for women and girls.” Initiatives such as the Safe Space Marquee at Richmond Station and bystander training programmes have been introduced to increase awareness and provide immediate support to those at risk. Richmond says it will continue to work with the police and community partners to improve public safety and prevent harm.
To ensure a smooth handover, all guidance on referrals will be updated in the coming weeks. Until 1 April 2025, referrals should continue to be sent to the current provider, Hestia. After this date, Refuge will be responsible for all new referrals, and further details on the referral process will be shared in due course.
