Pilot and co-pilot in Nigeria test positive for alcohol
Both a pilot and co-pilot have tested positive for alcohol after after the plane they were in control of, veered off the runway. The incident happened while they were landing the plane in Nigeria.
The country’s Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) screened the pilot and co-pilot following the incident in July at the Port Harcourt International Airport. A crew member was found to have tested positive for cannabis. All 103 people on board the Boeing 737 were unharmed.
Air Peace, the airline that operated the flight, said that the pilot had been sacked while the co-pilot has since returned to his role. In a statement, it said that the latter was acquitted by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) after preliminary investigations.
Tests undertaken by the NSIB discovered that both pilot and co-pilot tested positive for Ethul Glucuronide (EtG), an indication of recent consumption of alcohol. A cabin crew member was tested and found positive for THC, the psychoactive component in cannabis.
Air Peace revealed in a statement that it has not received any toxicology test results form the NSIB.
“We are yet to receive any official communication from the NSIB on such findings over a month after the incident and after the testing of the crew for alcohol which took place in less than an hour of the incident,” the airline said.
Investigations are still ongoing, the NSIB said, though it has recommended improved training and the reinforcement of internal procedures.
