Ferrari is considering a return of the manual transmission, its chief product development officer revealed to Australian magazine Carsales. But don’t expect that to be on its regular production models. If it happens, it will likely be limited to its limited production Icona cars, such as the SP1, SP2, and SP3.
It has currently been over a decade since any Ferrari left the factory with a manual gearbox. The last was the California, which the company offered with that option. But only two or three (depending on who you ask) were ever sold with a clutch pedal!
While modern automated manuals and dual-clutch gearboxes give performance that’s hard to match, many driving purists still long for the ability to have more control and feedback from their cars. The feeling that a manual gearbox can give is hard to match with any automated system.
For years, Ferrari has shunned the idea of a manual, saying it would never return. Porsche made a similar announcement, before unveiling the 911 R. That car sold so well that it convinced the German company that there is still demand. And with how long enthusiasts have had to wait, whatever Ferrari is planning to reveal will likely be an instant classic.
