City of London Gears Up for the Historic Lord Mayor’s Show

On Saturday, 9th November, Londoners and visitors alike will have the chance to witness a tradition that stretches back over 800 years: the Lord Mayor’s Show 2024. This colourful celebration, a staple of London’s cultural calendar, will bring together more than 7,000 people, 250 horses, and over 50 decorated floats, filling the streets from The Mansion House to the Royal Courts of Justice.

The star of this year’s procession will be Alastair King, the newly elected 696th Lord Mayor of the City of London, who will make his grand entrance in the iconic golden State Coach—a fixture of the Lord Mayor’s Show since 1757. King will lead the parade, waving to an expected crowd of 350,000 people lining the streets, as well as millions more watching from home on BBC One. Accompanying him will be an array of floats featuring City charities, community groups, musicians, performers, military bands, and historic Livery Companies, celebrating the diverse and dynamic fabric of the City.

In a city constantly on the move, the Lord Mayor’s Show connects London’s past to its present, highlighting a unique combination of tradition and innovation. Alastair King, who succeeds economist and scientist Professor Michael Mainelli, will focus his mayoral year on the theme “Growth Unleashed.” King’s goals include promoting business and innovation, advocating for London’s financial sector, and supporting communities across the City.

“The Lord Mayor’s Show is the soul of London—as unique as it is historic,” King stated, “and it will be a privilege to be at the heart of this wonderful event. I’m eager to celebrate the Square Mile’s communities and to help London remain a thriving, competitive city for business.”

The procession will set off at 11:00 am from The Mansion House, with live commentary by BBC’s Mishal Husain, making this a perfect day out for families, history buffs, and those simply looking to experience one of London’s grandest spectacles. For those planning to attend, expect to see a fantastic mix of old and new, as well as plenty of British pomp and pageantry.
