Local Artists Bring Creative Works to Kelmscott House in Hammersmith

Kelmscott House in Hammersmith is once again hosting a remarkable display of local artists, featuring artworks by students from the Macbeth Centre. This historic home of the Arts & Crafts icon William Morris provides a fitting venue for the showcase, which aligns perfectly with Morris’s legacy of craftsmanship and design.

The exhibition, presented by the William Morris Society, showcases various works from local artists who have trained at Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s Macbeth Centre. This marks the third year the society has partnered with the Centre to bring these community creations to the public.

Celebrating Local Artists at William Morris’s Historic Home

Kelmscott House, where William Morris lived from 1878 until his death in 1896, has long been a beacon of arts and design. The current exhibition combines the creativity of modern artists with the legacy of Morris, whose influence on the Arts & Crafts movement continues to inspire artists worldwide. The students’ works are displayed alongside the museum’s ongoing exhibition, bringing a fresh local dimension to this historic space.

“We are always delighted to host the Macbeth Centre exhibition and are particularly proud of this year’s group,” said Vanessa Manson from the William Morris Society. “The students at Macbeth are incredibly talented artists and craft makers, and it gets more and more difficult to narrow down who we display each year.”

The Macbeth Centre, supported by Hammersmith & Fulham Council, offers a wide range of arts and crafts classes for budding artists. To see a full list of their programmes and enrol, visit their website.

Featured Artists and Their Works

This year’s showcase includes diverse pieces, from portraiture to textiles, woodwork, stained glass, ceramics, and jewellery. Notable artists include Elena Sivachenko, whose silver brooch, Ludmila: My Doctor’s Heart, was selected for the exhibition. This piece, originally crafted as a gift for her doctor, reflects her personal journey and gratitude. “I was so happy for this recognition. It really helps my confidence. The Macbeth Centre has played an extraordinary role in my wellbeing,” she shared.

Another featured artist, Lucy Floyer, brings a unique touch with her stained glass work titled Parakeets in Ealing. “William Morris is an artist and designer I greatly admire,” Lucy explained. “It’s a great honour for my work to be exhibited at Kelmscott House.”

Visit the Exhibition

Residents of Hammersmith & Fulham have the chance to explore this exceptional local talent for free. The Macbeth Centre learners’ exhibition is open every Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday from 2pm to 5pm, until Sunday, 3rd November.

The exhibition is held at the Coach House and basement of Kelmscott House, located at 26 Upper Mall, Hammersmith W6 9TA. As an added treat, the William Morris Society is also showcasing a collection of objects donated by Helena Stephenson, an enthusiastic admirer of Morris.

Kelmscott House, operated by the William Morris Society, continues to preserve and celebrate the life and ideas of William Morris (1834-1896), a designer, craftsman, and environmentalist who left an indelible mark on the Victorian era’s artistic landscape.
