Learner drivers are already facing many challenges. From the high costs of driving lessons to the anxiety that comes with learning to drive, we’ve all been there. And to add to their stress, data from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has revealed that learners at over half of test centres in the country have a waiting list of over six months.
The figures say that the number of centres with such an average waiting time has nearly doubled between February 2024 and February 2025 to 183 sites. On top of that, the average waiting time for a practical test across the UK has increased from three and a half to five months.
The DVSA has implemented measures to crack down on bots buying test slots to sell for profit. The changes would also prevent instructors from booking tests for a pupil they have not been teaching, or booking a test that the learner will not take.
In addition, the DVSA has announced that it intends to hire an additional 450 examiners as part of its efforts to cut down waiting times for learners to an average of seven weeks by the end of the year. A the time of writing it has 1600 examiners.
