As the sports coupe market seems to be on the decline, Honda has confirmed that the upcoming sixth-generation Prelude will be coming to Europe, and possibly the UK as well, in 2026.
The latest two-door will debut Honda’s S+ Shift technology, which the Japanese company says will further advance the “joy of driving.”
The new Prelude will also mark 25-years of Honda’s hybrids, beginning with the unique and quirky Insight in 1999. The new car, which comes to Europe in the “early part” of 2026, will debut a new transmission type.
The S+ Shift which will come with the new Prelude, promises to simulate the sound and feel of a quick automatic gear change, allowing it to “deliver the model’s perfect balance of exhilarating driving pleasure to a new generation of Prelude drivers,” according to Honda.
The original Prelude debuted 46 years ago. Honda says it was seen as a high-performance showcase of its cutting-edge technology across five generations. It was discontinued in 2000 but the Japanese company says that the new car will pick up where it left off, offering a “compelling blend of style and sophistication alongside an efficient hybrid powertrain.”
Either way, sports cars, and low-cost sports coupes (though we’re not sure what the Honda will cost) have been on the decline recently. Unless you’re shopping for a premium badge, there haven’t been many options in recent years. The Toyota 86 and Mazda MX-5 have all had the entry-level sports car market to themselves. Nissan has opted not to bring the new Z to the UK. Hopefully, the Prelude will convince other manufacturers that there is still a demand for affordable driver’s cars.
