Join the ‘On Your Street’ Survey and Help Boost Wandsworth’s Biodiversity Through Your Garden
Private domestic gardens encompass 716 hectares in Wandsworth, accounting for nearly a fifth of the borough’s total area.
Enable, the council’s contractor, is encouraging residents to participate in the brief online “On Your Street” survey. Participants will be asked to provide details about their gardens, such as the presence of wildflower areas, long grass sections, compost piles, or small ponds, and to report on the species they observe in their gardens.
Biodiversity officers will collaborate with Greenspace Information for Greater London CIC (GiGL) to analyze the survey results. These insights will contribute to the council’s Biodiversity Strategy, which aims to improve the quality of existing habitats, create new ones, enhance connectivity between them, expand priority areas, and engage the local community in supporting biodiversity.
Judi Gasser, the Cabinet Member for Environment, emphasised the importance of private gardens for wildlife: “Private gardens are a crucial habitat for wildlife, and we want to understand the role they play in biodiversity. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey. The more data we collect, the more it will enhance our work to protect and enhance species and habitats.”
