Emma Raducanu Searches for New Coach After Cavaday Exit

Emma Raducanu is once again on the hunt for a new coach after Nick Cavaday stepped back from his role, citing the need to “prioritise getting back to full health.” The young British tennis star, who has experienced a carousel of coaching changes throughout her career, praised Cavaday for his contributions during a pivotal time in her recovery and return to form. This shift leaves Raducanu in search of her seventh full-time coach since turning professional.

Cavaday, who had known Raducanu since she was just 10 years old, took on the role shortly before the 2022 Australian Open. His steady presence marked a departure from the string of short-lived coaching partnerships that characterised Raducanu’s rapid rise to fame. Despite wrist and ankle surgeries that sidelined her for much of 2023, WTA Tennis Official Rankings, show Raducanu has re-established herself in the world’s top 60, under Cavaday’s guidance. Reflecting on their time together, Raducanu expressed gratitude for his support, particularly in the challenging post-surgery months. “I’d like to thank Nick for a great partnership over the last year and a bit. I wish him all the best in his next chapter and no doubt we’ll stay in touch,” she said.

Cavaday’s exit, however, reignites questions about Raducanu’s ongoing search for stability in her coaching team. Since her meteoric rise at Wimbledon in 2021 and her historic US Open victory later that year, Raducanu has worked with several high-profile coaches, including Nigel Sears, Andrew Richardson, Torben Beltz, Dmitry Tursunov, and Sebastian Sachs. While each coach brought different strengths, their tenures were often brief, fuelling speculation about Raducanu’s coaching strategy.

Cavaday, 38, highlighted the challenges of maintaining his health while navigating the demanding tennis calendar. “It’s important for me to spend some more time at home and prioritise getting back to full health, which is hard to do with the extensive calendar,” he explained. Despite his departure, Cavaday expressed optimism about Raducanu’s future, stating, “I am glad Emma is back to being established on tour now with a ranking inside the top 60, and I look forward to seeing what she does from here.”

Raducanu, meanwhile, remains focused on her training, recently travelling to Singapore for a WTA 250 event with fitness trainer Yutaka Nakamura. As she resumes her search for a new coach, she is also reflecting on the importance of continuity within her team. Speaking last December, she shared her preference for a consistent coaching relationship, noting, “It’s not my philosophy to chop and change coaches. When I enjoy it, and it’s a good energy, then it’s a nice feeling.” This sentiment underscores her ongoing effort to find a coach who can provide long-term guidance.

For British tennis fans, Raducanu’s coaching decisions have become a topic of fascination and debate. With her undeniable talent and resilience, there’s hope that the next coach will help her unlock her full potential. As her journey unfolds, one thing remains certain: Emma Raducanu continues to captivate the world with her determination and grit.
