EE and Freshwave Expand Small Cell Network Across the City of London

A new rollout of 50 outdoor small cell sites is set to strengthen mobile connectivity in the City of London, following on from a successful partnership between EE and Freshwave. The move builds on an earlier deployment of 25–35 sites last year, showing that the initial project delivered the expected results.
These small cells are positioned outdoors with pedestrians in mind, and EE reports that its existing Freshwave sites in the Square Mile already carry an average of 125 terabytes of data per week. For subscribers, the result is smoother browsing and streaming in areas that typically experience high demand. For the operator, the cells help relieve pressure on the wider macro network, an increasingly important step as mobile data use grows year on year.
“As demand for high-capacity, low-latency connectivity continues to grow, we’re proud to be expanding our mobile network in the heart of the City of London,” said James Hope, Director of Mobile Radio Access Networks at EE. “These additional sites will further boost performance and resilience for residents and visitors alike, with robust mobile connectivity being key to supporting the City’s digital future.”
Tom Sleigh, Chairman of the Planning and Transportation Committee at the City of London Corporation, echoed the importance of this expansion. “As more people expect seamless connectivity wherever they go, enhancing coverage across the City of London is an essential step to becoming future-ready. We’re delighted to see this kind of collaborative deployment taking shape in the City and look forward to continuing to work with EE and Freshwave on delivering this transformation.”
