Danish-Swedish Farmdog is the newest breed to gain reocgnition
The American Kennel Club (AKC) has recognised the Danish-Swedish Farmdog to its list of recognised dog breeds, bringing its total number of recognised breeds to 202. The animal, which looks similar to a Jack Russel Terrier, is said to be an independent, hardworking, and playful.
“Danish-Swedish Farmdogs are small, compact dogs with a big attitude and a passion for a job and a challenge,” the AKC says. “A dedicated and hardy working breed, Farmdogs are far from needy, capable of entertaining themselves, and, like a cat, will lie on their back and play with a ball. These dogs are ready to accompany their owners to any activity.”
The Danish-Swedish Farmdog has been around for centuries, with skeletons resembling them being found from 1200-year-old Viking burial sites. They have served a variety of roles, including diving, catching pests, and even as circus performers.
The breed has been extremely popular in Scandinavia, as well as Germany and the Netherlands, though it has not yet caught on in the USA. Only 400 are known to exist in homes in the country, but formal recognition and greater education may make it a more familiar face there.
The breed will be making a debut at the Working Group Category at the National Dog Show in Philadelphia on Thanksgiving, set to air on American network NBC.
