Chloe Kelly Euro 2025 victory crowned with another winning penalty

Chloe Kelly once again delivered when it mattered most, helping England secure a dramatic Euro 2025 victory over Spain with a pinpoint assist and the decisive penalty in the shootout. It’s becoming something of a pattern – Kelly comes off the bench, changes the game, and finishes the job with nerve and composure.

This time, the stage was Frankfurt. England had fallen behind early, forced to reshuffle when Lauren James was taken off with an injury in the first half. Kelly, who’d started on the bench as usual, came on in the 41st minute. Sixteen minutes later, she delivered a trademark curling cross from the left for Alessia Russo to head home the equaliser.

When the match went to penalties, it was Kelly who stepped up to take England’s fifth. With the same hop, skip, and firm finish she’s become known for, she tucked the ball away and sealed the win, just as she had in Euro 2022.

“I just came on and wanted to make something happen,”

she said post-match. “I actually missed three penalties in training yesterday, so I was adamant I wasn’t missing another.”

This wasn’t the first time Kelly changed the outcome of a game during the tournament. In the quarter-final against Sweden, she set up two crucial goals that pulled England back from a 2–0 deficit. Against Italy in the semi-finals, she scored in the 119th minute after her own penalty was initially saved. Across the tournament, her role as a game-changer has been hard to ignore, even if she never started a match.

Off the pitch, Kelly’s season has also seen major change. After being deemed surplus to requirements at Manchester City, she secured a loan in January, followed by a permanent move to Arsenal during the Euros. The move has clearly worked for her – she won the Champions League with Arsenal in May and now adds another international title to her name.

“Thank you to everyone who wrote me off,” she said with a smile after the final. “I’m grateful.”

With a growing record of decisive moments at the highest level, Chloe Kelly is fast becoming one of the most reliable players in the game. It’s not just about her goals or assists—it’s her ability to deliver exactly when it’s needed. And right now, England can count on her.
