Barbican Centre gets funding for repairs and upgrades

A £191 million funding package for the Barbican Centre has been approved that would support “critical repairs and upgrades” at the “iconic” attraction. Elected Members of the City Corporation’s top decision-making body, the Court of Common Council, agreed the move on Thursday the 5th of December.

The package is set to fund the first phase of the Barbican Renewal Programme, a five-year project of works that will “secure the future of this internationally renowned, grade-II listed” building.

The Queen opened the Barbican Centre in 1982, declaring it “one of the wonders of the modern world.” The works would safeguard its future as a leading arts venue and make improvements to accessibility and energy efficiency.

This is one of a number of “transformative projects” from the City of London. These include the Salisbury Square Development, which will house the new City of London Police HQ and multi-courts complex, and the new London Museum at West Smithfield. The Barbican Renewal Programme is a crucial part of Destination City, the City’s plan to turn the Square Mile into a world-leading business, culture, and leisure destination.

Its £191 million contribution will make up 80% of the amount needed for the first five-year phase of the renewal programme for the centre. In 2025, a major fundraising campaign will launch to enable the complete restoration and refurbishment of key spaces at the venue. This will include upgrades to the foyers, lakeside terrace, and conservatory.
