Air Pollution is “greatest threat to your health” says H&F

Hammersmith & Fulham has launched a series of initiatives to combat the growing threat of air pollution, which is responsible for more than seven percent of local deaths, according to recent statistics. The borough, which ranks as the tenth worst area for air pollution in the UK, is now focusing on improving the air quality in both residential neighbourhoods and green spaces.

Recent figures show that air pollution causes approximately 36,000 premature deaths across the UK each year, a number 20 times greater than those caused by road traffic accidents. H&F, one of the most densely populated boroughs in London, is particularly affected, with local residents exposed to toxic gases such as nitrogen oxide (NOx), as well as emissions from vehicles, gas boilers, and construction dust.

To address these risks, H&F is taking bold steps. The borough is working alongside experts at Imperial College London to develop innovative solutions and has committed to meeting World Health Organization air quality standards by 2030. Among the measures being implemented are the creation of Clean Air Neighbourhoods in south Fulham, where smart technology is being used to reduce out-of-borough traffic. This initiative has already seen 15,000 fewer cars on local streets each day, significantly reducing congestion and pollution.

Additionally, H&F is planting more trees, including the establishment of four Tiny Forests across the borough, and supporting the transition to electric vehicles with the densest network of charging points in the UK. The council is also making strides in reducing emissions from buildings by replacing older boilers with cleaner heat networks and heat pumps.

The Clean Air Neighbourhoods initiative has shown impressive results, cutting an estimated 1.9 tonnes of carbon emissions and 1.35kg of nitrogen oxide every day, leading to a quieter, safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists.

By taking these steps, H&F aims to protect the health of local residents, especially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions, while improving the borough’s overall quality of life.
